Kwankwaso Receives Defecting Kano APC Lawmaker as Political Realignments Intensify in State

According to a report by Daily Post on Friday, May 22, 2026, the Kano State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress recorded a political gain on Thursday following the defection of Abdulmajid Isa Umar Mai Rigar Fata, the member representing Gwale Constituency in the Kano State House of Assembly, from the All Progressives Congress.

Sources familiar with the development said the lawmaker decided to leave the APC after reportedly failing to secure the party’s nomination to seek another term in the Assembly ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Mai Rigar Fata currently represents Gwale Local Government Area, the home constituency of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. His departure from the ruling APC is expected to attract political attention within the state because of Gwale’s strategic importance in Kano politics.

The lawmaker was officially welcomed into the Nigeria Democratic Congress during a meeting held on Thursday in Abuja. The reception was conducted by senior NDC figure Rabiu Kwankwaso at his residence in the Federal Capital Territory.

Also joining the Nigeria Democratic Congress was Kabiru Sani Auwal Obi, a former Vice Chairman of Gwale Local Government Area. His defection added to the growing list of political figures aligning with the party in Kano State.

The latest development comes amid ongoing political realignments across Kano as parties intensify preparations for future elections. Political observers in the state have continued to monitor movements among lawmakers and influential local politicians as internal contests over party nominations and leadership positions reshape alliances.

Neither the Kano State chapter of the APC nor representatives of the defecting politicians immediately issued an official statement regarding the reasons behind the move.
