The heartbreaking disappearance of two-year-old Omphile Sethole has taken a dramatic turn after Limpopo police arrested the toddler’s grandparents on allegations of child negligence.
Authorities confirmed that Omphile’s 52-year-old grandmother and 55-year-old grandfather were arrested on Friday, 15 May 2026, by members of the Mokopane Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.
The couple is expected to appear before the Mahwelereng Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 18 May 2026, as investigations into the child’s disappearance continue.
Little Omphile vanished from her home in Ga-Mabuela village, located under the Tinmyne policing area, during the early hours of Saturday, 2 May 2026.
According to police reports, the grandmother allegedly discovered the child missing at approximately 06:00 that morning. Investigators also noted that a window in the room where the toddler had been sleeping was found open, prompting police to initially open cases of housebreaking and kidnapping.
At the time she disappeared, Omphile was reportedly wearing a pink jersey and black tights.
Despite ongoing search operations and widespread public appeals, the toddler remains missing, with experienced investigators continuing around-the-clock efforts to locate her.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe welcomed the arrests and stressed that investigators from the Mokopane FCS Unit are fully committed to uncovering the truth behind the case.
She also appealed to members of the public to provide credible information that could assist investigators, while warning against the spread of misinformation and rumours, which authorities say have already caused distress to the family and community.
