The screening process for aspirants contesting in the 2026 National Convention of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has officially commenced, as the Independent Convention Planning Committee (ICPC) outlined modalities to ensure a transparent and credible exercise.
This followed a meeting of the NANS-ICPC Screening Committee held earlier today, April 13, 2026, in Abuja, where members deliberated extensively on procedures to guide the exercise.
The ICPC, the body responsible for organising and supervising the NANS national convention and elections, plays a critical role in screening and certifying eligible candidates ahead of the emergence of new student leaders.
At the meeting, chaired by Okereafor Bestman, members drawn from across various states of the federation resolved that the screening exercise would commence daily at 10:00 a.m. on a first-come, first-served basis.
The committee further directed that all aspirants must appear in person before the panel with original copies of their credentials, alongside ten photocopies of each document and evidence of intention forms.
In a bid to ensure transparency and proper documentation of the process, the committee also mandated the Media Sub-Committee to designate a representative to cover the entire screening exercise.
Speaking during the session, the chairman urged members to approach their responsibilities with diligence and integrity, stressing the importance of delivering on the committee’s mandate.
Similarly, remarks attributed to the ICPC leadership emphasised the need for fairness, courage and strict adherence to the NANS constitution and established guidelines throughout the exercise.
The resolutions are coming as preparations intensify for the 2026 NANS National Convention scheduled to hold in Abuja, where new national executives of the student body are expected to emerge.
Observers note that the screening stage remains a critical phase in the electoral process, often determining the credibility of the convention, as only qualified aspirants are cleared to contest for various offices.
With the exercise now underway, stakeholders have expressed optimism that the process will produce credible candidates and set the tone for a hitch-free convention.
