Gunmen Ambush Mourners, Leave Trail of Death and Abduction in Benue

What began as a journey of mourning ended in bloodshed in Ushongo Local Government Area, where gunmen ambushed a group of mourners and unleashed terror without warning.

The victims, returning from a burial in Sati Ikov ward, were suddenly confronted by armed attackers who opened fire, killing three instantly and abducting two others.

Witnesses recount a chilling scene—gunshots ripping through the night, mourners scrambling for safety, and chaos replacing quiet grief. By the time the dust settled, three lives had been cut short, while two others were dragged into the unknown.

From Makurdi, a shaken resident described the нападение as swift and ruthless, with no chance for escape.

Lawmaker Simon Gabo confirmed the tragedy, naming the dead as Bem Msughter, Aondo Chia, and Sunday Terwase. He also revealed that Aondongu Amos and Mrs. Arinze were abducted during the assault.

Gabo condemned the persistent violence plaguing the region, blaming armed groups believed to be operating from nearby Katsina-Ala Local Government Area. According to him, the attackers exploit hidden riverine and forest routes to strike and disappear.

Security personnel have since moved into the area, but for residents, the fear remains palpable. Another burial has ended in tragedy—and a community is left counting its losses while waiting for answers.
