Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has alleged that many terrorists and criminals in Nigeria are known to security agencies and have connections with people in government.
During an interview shared by SYMFONI TV, Sowore reacted to recent comments by Islamic scholar Ahmad Gumi, popularly known as Sheikh Gumi. Gumi had earlier said that the Nigerian government knows the identities and locations of terrorists and that he does not visit bandit camps alone when negotiating with them, adding that some government officials are usually aware of such meetings.
Sowore said Gumi’s statement did not reveal anything new, insisting that many criminals operate with the knowledge of authorities. According to him, major terrorists and kidnappers in the country are not unknown figures to security agencies.
He claimed that there are cases where criminals openly interact with powerful individuals, suggesting that some of them maintain relationships with people in positions of authority. As an example, he alleged that kidnappers can sometimes be seen participating in social events linked to top officials, including ceremonies involving senior police officers.
Sowore also alleged that individuals involved in fraud have previously been given offices within the headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force.
In his words, "But you find even find Kidnappers doing MC's at the children's naming ceremony of police commissioners in Nigeria."
