Gbolahan Olaniyi, a survivor of a 42-day kidnapping ordeal in Ekiti State, Nigeria, recounted a chaotic scene during the ransom handover that underscored the greed and disorganization among his captors.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on News Central TV, he described how his mother delivered the ransom payment along with additional items, including a N20,000 recharge card.
The kidnappers, upon receiving the funds and provisions that evening, initially reacted with jubilation, dancing and expressing happiness as they prepared to count the money.
However, tensions escalated quickly when they began dividing the cash.
A dispute erupted among the group leaders and subordinates over the sharing arrangement, leading to a physical fight that disrupted the process.
During this commotion, Olaniyi and other captives briefly considered an escape opportunity presented by the kidnappers’ distraction.
He ultimately refrained, reassured by earlier assurances from the abductors that he would be released the following day once the payment was confirmed.
This expectation brought him significant relief amid the uncertainty.
His words: “After my mom brought the N20,000 recharge card (the paper type) and the ransom, the kidnappers were happy and started dancing. While they were counting the money, a fight broke out between them, as the Ogas and boys started fighting over how to share the money. During that period, me and the others planned on how to escape, but I didn’t since they already told me I’ll be leaving tomorrow after the ransom payment. So I was very happy.”
