According to a report by The Sun News, on Thursday, March 26, 2026, a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osita Okechukwu, dismissed claims by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) that Nigeria is drifting towards a one-party state, describing the allegation as unfounded propaganda.
Okechukwu made this known while speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the APC South-East Zonal Congress held in Enugu.
He argued that the ADC and its leadership should be held responsible for actions capable of weakening Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.
He linked the current political concerns to the 2022 presidential primary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), noting that the zoning arrangement was ignored.
According to him, this decision contributed to internal challenges within the party.
The APC chieftain stressed that zoning remains a vital part of Nigeria’s political structure.
He explained that the principle was introduced to ensure fairness, unity, and inclusion across different regions of the country.
Okechukwu also criticised media personality Dele Momodu for dismissing zoning, stating that such remarks could fuel division between the North and the South.
To support his position, he referred to past political events and the role played by notable leaders, including Atiku Abubakar.
He said, "We must not forget how Chief Olusegun Obasanjo denied his friend Dr Peter Odili support and insisted on adherence to zoning, that the president must come from the North.”
Okechukwu also recalled the 2014 PDP presidential primary and the 2018 exercise, noting that zoning was respected in past political processes.
He maintained that zoning is still important for Nigeria’s stability, adding that major political parties such as the APC, PDP, and Labour Party are committed to the principle ahead of the 2027 elections, while accusing the ADC of wavering on the issue.
