The Senate of the University of Ibadan has approved the withdrawal of 226 undergraduate students due to poor academic performance.
The decision was taken during a Senate meeting held on Monday, where the results of both graduating and non-graduating students for the 2024/2025 academic session were reviewed and approved.
According to reports, the affected students had a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) below 1.0. Based on the university’s academic policy, students whose CGPA falls below this mark are advised to withdraw from the institution.
Following the approval, the affected students were denied access to the university’s portal for further course registration. This means their academic programmes in the school have officially come to an end.
Findings show that the students cut across different faculties and levels, from 100 level to 500 level.
Breakdown across faculties includes:
Faculty of Science – 79 students
Faculty of Technology – 45 students
Faculty of Agriculture – 35 students
College of Medicine – 18 students
Faculty of Education – 18 students
Faculty of Renewable Natural Resources – 10 students
Faculty of Arts – 9 students
Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences – 4 students
Faculty of Law – 3 students
Faculty of Veterinary Medicine – 2 students
Faculty of Environmental Design and Management – 3 students
The Director of Public Communication at the university, Mrs. Adejoke Akinpelu, confirmed the development. She explained that the action is part of the institution’s normal academic review process.
According to her, students were advised to withdraw because their academic performance did not meet the required standard.
The development has sparked conversations among students and education stakeholders about academic performance and institutional standards.
