According to the Anadolu agency, a diplomatic proposal from Moscow aimed at easing tensions in the widening conflict between the United States and Iran has quietly stalled after being rejected by Washington, according to a new report.
During a phone call earlier this week, Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested that Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium could be transferred to Russia as part of a broader arrangement to help end the war. The idea was raised in discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump, Axios reported Friday, citing American officials familiar with the conversation.
But the proposal did not gain traction in Washington.
"This is not the first time it was offered. It hasn't been accepted. The U.S. position is we need to see the uranium secured," a US official told Axios.
The concept itself is not new. Moscow had floated similar ideas during nuclear negotiations between Washington and Tehran in 2025, months before the current conflict erupted. At the time, the suggestion was that Russia could hold Iran’s enriched uranium outside the country, theoretically reducing the risk of it being used in a nuclear weapons program while leaving room for diplomatic compromise.
Iran, however, previously resisted the idea. According to reports from the final round of talks before the war began, Tehran instead proposed diluting the uranium domestically under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
For the White House, officials say the question remains whether any arrangement would genuinely neutralize the material. As one official put it: "The president (Trump) talks to everyone, (Chinese President) Xi, Putin, the Europeans and he's always willing to make a deal. But it has to be a good deal. The president doesn't make bad deals."
The conversation comes amid growing suspicion in Washington that Moscow may be quietly supporting Tehran during the conflict. When asked whether Russia was assisting Iran, Trump responded cautiously.
