In a recent statement via his official X account, human rights lawyer and public commentator Dele Farotimi has called on Nigerians to focus on the electoral process as the main path to political change, while shared his views on how citizens can push for reforms in the country.
"In the absence of an armed insurrection to overthrow the existing governance system, the only path that is left to the revolutionary is the electoral process. Present the revolutionary agenda as a manifesto, mobilize the people behind it, and prepare them to defend their votes," he wrote.
In his post, Farotimi explained that without an armed uprising, the most realistic way to challenge the current system of governance is through elections and stressed that those seeking change must organize themselves and present clear ideas to the public in the form of a strong political agenda.
According to him, people who desire a different kind of leadership must work together to mobilize voters across the country, he said this involves educating citizens, building support, and encouraging active participation in elections at all levels.
The lawyer underlined the importance of protecting votes and noted that citizens must be prepared to ensure that their votes count and are not undermined during the electoral process, in his view, civic engagement should go beyond just casting ballots, as it also requires vigilance and commitment to accountability.
Farotimi’s comments came in response to a social media user who questioned how a political revolution could happen through the ballot box, the user expressed doubts about whether electoral reforms alone could bring meaningful change, pointing to concerns about the credibility of elections.
In his response, Farotimi maintained that while the system may have its challenges, abandoning the electoral route is not the solution and suggested that sustained participation and pressure from the public could gradually lead to improvements in governance.
