The House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee on Drugs and Illicit Trafficking, led by Hon. Timehin Adelegbe, has commended the leadership of NAFDAC in combating drug abuse and protecting public health. The Committee made this known during a courtesy visit to the Agency to strengthen collaboration and enhance regulatory and legislative responses to illicit drug trafficking and substance abuse in Nigeria.

Hon. Adelegbe highlighted the widespread impact of drug and alcohol abuse on individuals, families, and national security, noting the need for coordinated action. He stated that the engagement forms part of the Committee’s oversight function and aims to deepen partnership with NAFDAC in developing effective legislation to curb illicit drug activities and ensure proper regulation of medicines. The Committee also pledged legislative support to strengthen NAFDAC’s operations and address identified regulatory challenges.

Responding, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, appreciated the Committee’s support and reiterated the Agency’s commitment to safeguarding public health. She highlighted ongoing enforcement challenges, including the regulation of alcohol packaging, and raised concerns over increasing underage alcohol consumption.

The Director-General called for sustained stakeholder collaboration and legislative backing to strengthen enforcement and protect Nigerians from the health and social consequences of substance abuse.
