Thousands of Higher National Diploma (HND) graduates from polytechnics across Nigeria are reportedly stranded months—and in some cases years—after completing their studies as they wait to be mobilised for the National Youth Service Corps.
Many affected graduates have blamed administrative bottlenecks within their institutions as well as the limited mobilisation quota allocated by the National Youth Service Corps.
Findings by Sunday PUNCH revealed that the prolonged delay has left numerous graduates unable to secure jobs or move forward with their careers, as many employers require completion of the NYSC programme before employment.
While some graduates initially suspected the issue might be connected to admission documentation processed through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, the board has clarified that it does not handle admissions into Higher National Diploma programmes.
The clarification has shifted attention to institutional clearance procedures and the NYSC mobilisation framework, which many believe require urgent review to prevent graduates from remaining stuck in career limbo.
The situation has triggered growing concern among students and education stakeholders, with calls for authorities to streamline the mobilisation process and address the backlog affecting polytechnic graduates nationwide.
