Minister of Defence retired General Christopher Musa has attributed the recent surge in terrorist attacks in the Northeast to a religious motivation among insurgents, alleging that fighters are deliberately seeking death during the Ramadan period in the belief that dying in combat at that time will earn them entry into paradise.
Speaking in an interview with Channels TV, Gen. Musa said, "This is war, and war has its ebbs and flows. Again, the terrorists believe that when they die during the Ramadan period, they're going to Heaven. So they are ready to commit any act or to get killed because they believe they will be rewarded for doing so. But we have adjusted our strategies. You can see that in the past few days we have retaken those locations," he said.
He assured Nigerians that the military was not caught off guard and that President Tinubu had already approved a series of measures that were being rolled out to address the situation. He stated that the security forces were working as a united team and are committed to delivering results.
