Seven persons have been rescued by the Nigerian Navy following a boat collision at the Ogboinbiri waterways in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, with search efforts ongoing for other missing passengers.
The Navy said the swift search and rescue operation was launched after a distress call reported a collision between a Tantita patrol boat and a wooden market boat.
Personnel from NNS Soroh were immediately deployed to the scene, where their rapid response led to the rescue of seven victims.
The rescued individuals were evacuated to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment, while efforts continue to locate others still unaccounted for.
According to a statement signed by AA Folorunsho, the operation highlights the Navy’s commitment to safeguarding lives within Nigeria’s maritime domain, in line with the vision of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas.
The Navy noted that the latest rescue adds to its track record of successful emergency responses, including the rescue of 16 passengers during a sea robbery incident in the Ibaka–Calabar Channel in March 2026, 20 crew members from a burning vessel near Calabar in December 2025, and 10 crew members from a distressed vessel in November 2025. It also recalled the rescue of 17 kidnapped victims in Calabar waterways in October 2025.
The service reiterated its readiness to continue deploying personnel and assets to respond promptly to maritime emergencies, in line with global best practices, while assuring the public of its commitment to protecting lives and property across Nigeria’s waterways.
