According to a report by the Daily Post on Monday, March 9, 2026, the Rivers State House of Assembly has declined to confirm four out of the nine commissioner nominees sent by Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The screening exercise took place on Monday at the Assembly complex in Port Harcourt.
During the session, five nominees were successfully screened and confirmed for appointment. They include Mr. Tonye Bellgam, Professor Temple Nwofor, Dr. Peters Nwagor, Mr. Lekue Kenneth, and Sir Amairigha Edward Hart.
However, the Assembly rejected the nominations of Professor Datonye Alasia, Mrs. Charity Deemua, Tamuno Williams, and Otonye TKD Amachree. Lawmakers cited specific reasons for each rejection based on the screening process.
According to the House, Professor Alasia, who previously served as the Chief Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC) of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), was disqualified due to what they described as “poor performance” in his previous role. “They were rejected due to poor performance,” a lawmaker stated during the plenary.
The Assembly further explained that Otonye TKD Amachree faced over 11 petitions from members of his community regarding his involvement in local matters. Meanwhile, Mrs. Charity Deemua was not confirmed after failing to provide valid tax clearance documents as required by law. Tamuno Williams was stepped down for allegedly misleading the public about the Assembly’s activities.
