Mixed reactions have continued to trail comments by Ini Ememobong, the National Publicity Secretary of the faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with Aminu Turaki, over the party’s stance on a possible endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking on ARISE TV Morning Show on Thursday, Ememobong firmly ruled out any possibility of the PDP supporting Tinubu, describing such a move as “immoral and unjust.”
His remarks come amid ongoing reconciliation efforts within the PDP, which has been grappling with internal divisions and factional disputes. Ememobong stated that the reconciliation process must focus on strengthening the party as a credible opposition rather than turning it into what he described as an “appendage” of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
We’re hoping that during the PDP reconciliation process, reason will prevail over emotions. The Turaki-led faction will insist that this reconciliation aims to strengthen the party as an opposition, not an appendage,” he said.
The statement has sparked varied reactions, particularly in light of recent comments by Nyesom Wike, a prominent PDP figure and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, who has publicly backed Tinubu’s potential second-term bid in 2027. Wike had argued that the South should be allowed to complete eight years in power, a position that has deepened divisions within the opposition party.
Political observers note that Ememobong’s stance underscores the widening rift within the PDP, as different factions push conflicting agendas regarding the party’s future direction and relationship with the ruling government.
While some party loyalists have applauded Ememobong’s position as a necessary step to preserve the PDP’s identity as an opposition force, others believe the ongoing disagreements could weaken the party’s chances in future elections if not properly managed.
