The Council of Legal Education has dropped a bombshell for aspiring lawyers: only 114 universities are approved to run LL.B programmes in Nigeria, and students in unapproved schools risk being barred from the Nigerian Law School.
The official circular warns that universities offering law without council approval are breaking the law and face sanctions. Even more critical — students enrolled in unapproved programmes cannot proceed to Law School, putting their legal careers at risk.
Among the approved institutions are heavyweights like University of Lagos, University of Ibadan, Ahmadu Bello University, Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Nigeria, and University of Benin, along with federal, state, and private universities nationwide.
Temporary Moratoriums Alert:
• Baze University — 3-year suspension (2023/2024 to 2025/2026)
• Lead City University — 5-year suspension (2023/2024 to 2027/2028)
• Nigeria Police Academy — 2-year suspension (2024/2025 to 2025/2026)
The Council, empowered under the Legal Education Act, continues to regulate legal education across Nigeria, ensuring standards are maintained and the Nigerian Law School remains the ultimate gateway for practising lawyers.
