A Nigerian man, Chukwuemeka Ahanonu, has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the United Kingdom for the brutal killing of a 56-year-old mother of two, Nila Patel.
The court ruled that Ahanonu, 24, must serve a minimum of 21 years and six months after being found guilty of murder at Leicester Crown Court.
The tragic incident occurred on June 24, 2025, after the defendant’s car overturned near Leicester Royal Infirmary. Ms Patel, who had just alighted from a bus and was heading home, was violently attacked—punched, kicked, and stamped on—suffering fatal brain injuries. She died in hospital two days later.
Despite pleading guilty to manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility, Ahanonu was convicted of murder by a jury following a month-long trial.
Sentencing him, Judge Timothy Spencer KC described the act as:
“Shocking, brutal and merciless… You murdered a wholly innocent woman.”
The case has sparked outrage, highlighting concerns over violent crime and the devastating impact on victims and their families.
