The Federal Government has revealed that Nigeria requires at least 25 million tonnes of maize every year to meet national demand and strengthen the country’s food security.
The disclosure was made by the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Abdullahi, during the Quarterly Citizens and Stakeholders’ Engagement meeting held in Abuja on Friday.
According to the minister, maize remains one of the most important staple crops in Nigeria, widely used for human consumption, livestock feed, and industrial purposes. Meeting the annual demand, he noted, is crucial for ensuring stable food supply and improving national food security.
The government also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting smallholder farmers across the country, especially by improving access to agricultural financing, inputs, and other key interventions aimed at boosting productivity.
Officials say the move is part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to strengthen Nigeria’s agricultural sector, increase local food production, and reduce dependence on imports.
