Turkey’s Defence Ministry has confirmed that a ballistic missile launched from Iran was intercepted in Turkish airspace by NATO forces, marking the third such incident linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict.
According to officials, the missile was neutralised by NATO air and missile defence systems deployed in the eastern Mediterranean shortly after it entered Turkish territory.
The development triggered alarm at the strategic Incirlik Air Base — a major NATO military installation where U.S. troops are stationed. Reports from the state news agency Anadolu Agency indicated that air raid sirens were activated at the base hours before the interception.
Sirens were also reportedly heard in the eastern Turkish city of Batman, located about 600 kilometres from Incirlik, raising concerns about the expanding reach of the regional conflict.
Turkish authorities say the missile posed a potential threat to national security but was successfully destroyed before causing any damage or casualties.
The incident highlights the growing risk of the wider Middle East conflict spilling into NATO territory, as regional tensions continue to intensify.
