Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has reaffirmed his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), dismissing speculations linking him to possible defection to other political parties.
Saraki made this clarification during an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, March 26, 2026, while responding to questions about his political stance and recent silence in public discourse. When asked directly about his party affiliation, the interviewer stated, “So you’re a member of PDP.” Saraki responded, “I am a member.”
The interviewer further raised concerns about widespread speculation suggesting he might be considering a move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The interviewer said, “There are a lot of people who think that maybe you are going to the ADC.” Saraki replied, “No.”
The discussion also referenced doubts among political observers regarding his loyalty, with suggestions that he could return to the ruling party. The interviewer added, “Because you’ve been quiet. And there are doubts about your loyalty to the party and your sincerity on where you were standing. So people were saying, oh, Saraki, or he’s going back to the APC. Those were the thoughts.”
Responding, Saraki emphasised his consistency in political decisions. He stated, “No, I think my antecedents and my political career show that I’m not a follower. And I lead. And I’m very clear where I stand.”
He added, “I’m not somebody that will say something in the afternoon and say something else in the evening. What I believe in, I stand. And I take whatever comes with that.”
Reflecting on his political record, Saraki said, “I’ve shown it, whether it was in the Senate, whether I was a governor. That was my political life. If I’m going somewhere, you know about it. I’ll come and I’ll tell you this is where I stand.”
He attributed recent perceptions to reduced political activity, stating, “The quietness, maybe because unlike normal elective year for the last eight years, I’ll probably have been contested. In 2023, I contested for president in 2019.”
He further explained his position on future elections, adding, “So maybe because 2027, you know, I agree with the principle and I was part of the party that said, look, 2027, let us leave it to the zoning to the south and let the south, you know, finish this eight-year period.”
Saraki also clarified his stance regarding other parties, stating, “So maybe that lack of activity has given the wrong impression. But clearly, when ADC started, as you see, I was not part of that. And I made it clear that I was not going to be there.”
He concluded by reiterating his commitment to the PDP, saying, “And those who were suggesting I was going to go and join APC, I also made it clear that I’m going to stay here in PDP.
