According to a report by Punch on Friday, March 27, 2026, Columnist Tunde Odesola has described the ongoing clash between Dele Momodu and Femi Fani-Kayode as an example of how political disagreements in Nigeria often turn into personal battles.
According to Odesola, the conflict began after Momodu compared President Bola Tinubu to former military ruler Sani Abacha. He explained that the comment angered Fani-Kayode, who sees Tinubu as a political ally and benefactor, prompting him to react strongly.
Odesola said that instead of limiting his response to the issue raised, Fani-Kayode went further by bringing up Momodu’s past. He noted that Fani-Kayode revisited Momodu’s personal history, including his education and early struggles, as well as his connection to the late Moshood Kashimawo Abiola. He described this move as Fani-Kayode opening a “Book of Remembrance” to attack his opponent.
The columnist added that Momodu also responded with strong words, criticizing Fani-Kayode’s personality and suggesting that he is often involved in conflicts. According to Odesola, the exchange quickly moved away from a discussion of national issues and became focused on personal attacks.
Beyond the individuals involved, Odesola argued that the situation reflects a wider problem in Nigeria’s political space. He said many public figures now focus more on attacking one another than discussing policies or solutions to the country’s challenges.
According to him, the clash is not really about democracy or governance, but about influence, loyalty, and staying relevant in the political and media space. He added that each of the figures involved appears more concerned with protecting personal interests than addressing national concerns.
