The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 38-year-old man, Hamisu Abdullahi, following an incident during Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago’s Sallah visit to the Emir of Suleja.
According to police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun, the suspect was taken into custody after allegedly shouting “no water, no light” during the governor’s visit after Eid-el-Fitr prayers. He was subsequently transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna for questioning over alleged attempts to disrupt official activities.
Authorities revealed that Abdullahi has since been granted bail, with investigations still ongoing.
The incident has sparked conversations, especially as claims surfaced suggesting the arrest may have been politically influenced—though this remains unverified. The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, stated he was unaware of the situation when contacted.
Meanwhile, the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to caution the governor against actions that could threaten press freedom and citizens’ rights.
As reactions continue to trail the incident, many are raising concerns over freedom of expression and the line between public order and citizens’ voices.
