Iran may withdraw from this summer’s World Cup following US and Israeli airstr+kes that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Mehdi Taj, president of the Iranian Football Federation, told Iranian TV it is “unlikely” the team will participate given the current situation, though he noted the final decision rests with sports authorities.
If Iran does take part, they could face the United States on July 3 in Dallas, depending on group results.
Their first match is set against New Zealand at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, 107 days from now.
FIFA officials, including general secretary Mattias Grafstrom, said they are monitoring developments closely and are focused on ensuring a safe tournament across the US, Canada, and Mexico.
Iran qualified for a fourth consecutive World Cup by topping Group A in Asian qualifying and is drawn in Group G alongside Belgium, New Zealand, and Egypt.
