Iran has declared that no nation has the authority to exclude it from the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup following remarks by Donald Trump suggesting the team’s safety could be at risk in the United States.
Trump had earlier warned that although Iran’s national team could technically attend the tournament, their “life and safety” might be in danger if they travel to the U.S., amid rising tensions between the two countries.
Responding to the comments, Iranian officials insisted that participation in the World Cup is determined by FIFA and not by any individual country or political leader. They stressed that Iran earned its place in the competition through qualification and therefore cannot be barred from taking part.
Iran also argued that if a host country cannot guarantee the safety of participating teams, it raises questions about its ability to host such a global sporting event.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be jointly hosted by United States, Canada, and Mexico, and will feature an expanded format with 48 national teams competing.
The situation has sparked international discussion about the growing intersection between global politics and major sporting events.
