The International Olympic Committee has announced a major policy shift, banning transgender women from competing in all female categories at the Olympic Games and IOC-sanctioned events.
Under the new rule, eligibility for women’s events will be limited strictly to biological females, with verification based on a one-time SRY gene test — a move the IOC says is necessary to protect fairness, safety, and the integrity of women’s sports.
The policy will officially take effect at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, making it the first Olympics to operate under this updated regulation.
Importantly, the decision is not retroactive and will not impact grassroots or recreational sports programs.
This development also mirrors similar positions previously backed by Donald Trump regarding women’s sports in the United States.
As of now, it remains unclear how many transgender women are competing at the elite Olympic level, with no recorded participation at the 2024 Paris Games.
