Former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has emphasized the critical role of voters in shaping Nigeria’s political future, stating that public engagement remains the decisive factor in confronting party defections and elite maneuvers.
Sowore made the remarks during an interview on Mic On Podcast on Saturday, March 21, 2026, where he discussed historical and contemporary political dynamics in the country.
He explained the importance of citizen persistence in attaining freedom and influence. “So you must also look at history whether old history or recent or contemporary history. That it’s only people that give up on their freedom that will never attain freedom,” he said.
Sowore contrasted the limited impact of political elites with the potential of the electorate. “So the governors that you are referring to only have one voters card. All of them will only produce 30 votes or 32 votes or 36 votes. All of all of them joined the ruling party. The people have 90 some maybe almost 100 million voters card,” he stated.
He further emphasized the enduring role of ordinary citizens in political change. “And you know because apart from reporting news, you must also be a political junkie. I know that the governors are decamping but the people are not decamping to the APC. That’s the truth,” Sowore said.
Highlighting the potential for future electoral action, he added, “So the people must be somewhere waiting to unleash on the decampies when the right time comes and that is what we’re telling you will happen.”
