Guinea Dissolves 40 Political Parties Including Major Opposition Groups

 

The government of Guinea has dissolved 40 political parties, including the country’s three main opposition groups, through a late-night government decree.

The decision comes less than two months after Mamady Doumbouya, the former junta leader, was officially sworn in as president.

According to the decree issued late Friday by the Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralisation, the parties were dissolved for “failure to fulfil their obligations.”

In addition to dissolving the political groups, the government also stripped the affected parties of control over their assets, further tightening restrictions on their operations.

The move has drawn attention both within Guinea and internationally, as it significantly reshapes the country’s political landscape and opposition space following the recent political transition.
