According to a report by TheCable on Saturday, March 21, 2026, former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, has highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach to Nigeria’s insurgency, stressing that the military alone cannot bring lasting peace.
Buratai noted that the fight against extremist groups requires decisive action from the federal government, particularly against those financing terrorism.
He emphasized that identifying suspected financiers is insufficient unless the government takes concrete steps to prosecute and dismantle their networks.
Buratai reflected on the 2024 disclosure by the federal government of fifteen alleged terrorism financiers, including nine individuals and six bureau de change operators.
He pointed out that despite public demand for accountability, little progress has been made in addressing these cases.
According to Buratai, confronting insurgency requires coordinated efforts across government agencies, robust policy measures, and active societal engagement.
He stressed that military operations, while essential, cannot address the deep-seated social and ideological drivers of extremism alone.
Buratai further discussed the persistence of Boko Haram, noting that although attacks have decreased since 2015 and reclaimed territories mark progress, the threat remains.
