A 25-year-old woman from Barcelona, Noelia Castillo Ramos, has passed away through euthanasia after a long and emotional legal battle to determine her right to make that decision.
Noelia, who endured unimaginable trauma after being sexually assaulted twice in 2022, described those experiences as a turning point in her life. Following the incidents, she suffered a devastating fall that left her paraplegic and in constant, severe pain with no hope of recovery.
Her case gained widespread attention when her father challenged her decision in court. However, after a prolonged legal fight, the European Court of Human Rights ruled in her favour, affirming her right to choose.
In her only televised interview, Noelia made it clear she wanted an end to her suffering, questioning whether her family’s wishes should outweigh her daily reality of pain.
Despite opposing her decision, her mother remained by her side until the very end.
She passed away peacefully on Thursday evening after saying her goodbyes to loved ones.
A deeply emotional case that raises difficult questions about autonomy, suffering, and the right to die.
