Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, has stated that the Federal Government’s agricultural policies have led to a 50% reduction in the prices of essential food commodities across the country.
Kyari made the disclosure while speaking at the 2026 Ministerial Stakeholders’ Retreat in Abuja, noting that the development marks a major turnaround compared to previous years when food prices surged sharply nationwide.
According to the minister, the government’s interventions have not only helped stabilize food prices but have also attracted millions of dollars in agribusiness investments into the sector.
“This support has not only boosted agricultural productivity but also created jobs, increased incomes, and enhanced the overall competitiveness of Nigeria’s agribusiness sector, paving the way for a more prosperous and sustainable agricultural future,” Kyari said.
He explained that the government has been focusing on strengthening key agricultural value chains, including rice, maize, cassava, cocoa, yam, and oil palm, enabling farmers to transition from subsistence farming to profitable agribusiness ventures.
Kyari further highlighted several initiatives introduced to support farmers and improve food security, including:
• Distribution of over 1.9 million bags of fertilizer
• Construction of access roads to improve market connectivity
• Provision of solar-powered boreholes for rural communities
• Development of rural housing and market facilities
The initiatives, according to the minister, are part of broader efforts to improve food security, stimulate economic growth, and enhance livelihoods in rural communities across Nigeria.
