A former mayor from Texas, Mike Arnold, has alleged that the United Kingdom is against discussions about an independent Biafra because of possible financial consequences.
In a post shared on his verified Facebook page, Arnold claimed that if Biafra becomes independent, it could demand up to $6 trillion in reparations from Britain, a figure he described as one of the largest in history.
According to him, the roots of the issue go back to 1914 when Frederick Lugard merged the Northern and Southern protectorates to form Nigeria. He argued that this decision created long-term political and economic imbalance.
Arnold also referenced the Nigerian Civil War, stating that Britain supported the Nigerian government during the conflict while economic interests, especially oil, were at stake. He claimed that many lives were lost during the war and that the humanitarian crisis was severe.
He further alleged that British economic interests, particularly in oil operations at the time, influenced decisions during the war. According to him, these actions contributed to long-term damage in the Southeast.
Arnold explained that his $6 trillion estimate includes:
•Oil revenues linked to the region over decades
•Loss of lives during the civil war
•Structural and historical damages
He added that an independent Biafra could take such a claim to international courts.
The comments come amid ongoing concerns over the detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, with some pro-Biafra groups accusing Britain of not doing enough despite his citizenship status.
