….As EKSU Inducts 59 Nurses
A Professor of Nursing Science, Christiana Olanrewaju Sowunmi has identified professionalism as a cornerstone of high quality, compassionate and ethical healthcare delivery. She made the statement while delivering the 2nd Induction lecture titled Professionalism and Caring: the Core of Nursing Practice at the 2nd Induction and Oath Taking Ceremony for Nursing graduands of Ekiti State University, Ado – Ekiti. The event had in attendance professionals and academic experts to mark the culmination of rigorous training and the beginning of professional service of nursing graduands at the College of Medicine, Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, where 59 nurses were inducted into the Nursing profession.
The programmme, held on Thursday, 20th November 2025, at the university’s main auditorium had in attendance personalities and educationists from within and outside the state.
Professor Sowunmi described Nursing as a profession that blends knowledge, skill, compassion, and ethical responsibilities with humanity and professionalism. She asserted that as far as Nursing is concerned, professionalism and caring are inseparable, but are the twin pillars underpinning modern nursing. According to her, while Professionalism gives nursing its framework, caring gives the art of it.
She emphasized that compassion, which entails the ability to empathize with patients and deliver care with kindness, sensitivity, and respect; integrity, which signifies a consistent alignment between moral principles and professional behaviours are significant values that should always be upheld in the profession. She, therefore, urged the inductees to uphold professionalism and humanity throughout their service to patients and the society at large.
The Registrar, Council for Nursing and Midwifery of Nigeria, who was represented by Mr. Sambo Shehu Umar, while addressing the gathering, congratulated the inductees for successfully passing through the University academic programme coupled with their brilliant performance at the professional examination conducted by the Council for Nursing and Midwifery of Nigeria which have qualified them for registration and practice in Nigeria.
The NMCN Registrar informed the gathering that the Induction ceremony is usually organized to remind new professionals of their unique responsibilities toward the profession for safe and efficient care to the citizens.
He charged them to submit to the senior colleagues in the profession who are already working in the clinical areas for supervision and guidance in order to transit into full-fledged and competent professionals.
The 59 graduands then took the oath and were formally inducted into the Nursing profession.
The Vice Chancellor of Ekiti State University, Prof. Joseph Ayodele whose address was presented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Williams Adebayo, congratulated the inductees and commended their perseverance and commitment, noting that their achievement was a testament to their perseverance and the university’s dedication to excellence. “Today we celebrate hard work, resilience, discipline and the successful completion of a journey that has transformed young students into competent and professionally grounded nurses,” he said.
He urged the inductees to uphold professional ethics, act as good ambassadors of the institution, show compassion, and embrace leadership wherever they may serve.
Professor Ayodele used the occasion to reaffirm EKSU’s commitment to maintaining global best practices in health science education. Speaking at the event, the Provost, College of Medicine, Professor Deji Ajayi commended the graduands for making their families and their lecturers proud by distinguishing themselves as deserving nurses. He, however, urged them to continue to fly the University flag high in their future endeavours.
Speaking on behalf of the new nurses, the overall best graduating student, Oluwanifemi Emmanuel Oyedotun, expressed gratitude to the lecturers for guiding them through the rigours of training. He equally thanked their parents for their support. “We all are winners; I stand here as your mouthpiece. Surmounting the hurdles show that we are deserving champions, and I am proud of us all,” he added.
The ceremony also featured awards for outstanding performances, where Oluwanifemi Emmanuel Oyedotun was honoured as the best graduating student and Popoola Ayomi received the award for the best-behaved student, along with cash prizes.
The ceremony underscored EKSU’s unwavering commitment to producing nurses who exemplify both professional excellence and compassionate care, positioning the university as a beacon of health science education at national and international levels.
