Former President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has expressed confidence that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will participate in the 2027 general elections.
Saraki stated this during an interview with LEADERSHIP on Thursday, noting that Nigerians who experienced the impact of the PDP while it was in power would ensure the party remains on the ballot.
The former Senate President acknowledged existing disagreements within the opposition party but said leaders across different factions had agreed on the need to prioritise the party’s participation in the next general elections.
According to him, ensuring that aspirants can contest elective positions on the PDP platform remains a major priority for party stakeholders.
“I’m happy to say that despite whatever side anybody finds himself or herself in these disagreements, everybody has resolved that this is the number one priority for all of us,” Saraki said.
Saraki emphasised that the party must remain united in ensuring it fields candidates in the 2027 elections.
“Whether you are Governor Seyi Makinde, Governor Bala, the FCT Minister, or anyone else — including those who are neither — the key priority is that PDP must be able to field candidates for the 2027 elections,” he said.
He added that any issue capable of jeopardising the party’s chances of participating in the election must be resolved.
Saraki said: “Anything that will harm that or make it impossible must be set aside and resolved. I think that is where we are now, and it has not been easy to reach this position. We hope to maintain it and move forward.”
Saraki further stressed the importance of having a functional leadership structure within the PDP to achieve its political objectives.
He said the party must ensure the emergence of a National Working Committee (NWC) capable of organising its activities and preparing the party for the 2027 elections.
“The processes to achieve this are very clear. We must have a National Working Committee that will be able to deliver on this,” he added.
