An Abuja High Court has fined the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission ₦500,000 over repeated delays in the trial of former Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele.
The presiding judge, Justice Hamza Muazu, issued the penalty after the commission failed to present a key witness in court, leading to yet another adjournment.
The court heard that the witness, said to be crucial to the prosecution’s case, was unavailable despite prior notice, a development that drew strong اعتراض from the defence team, who argued that the delays were excessive and unjustified.
Although the court granted a final adjournment in the interest of justice, it stressed the need for diligence and timely prosecution, warning against further unnecessary delays.
The case has now been adjourned for continuation as proceedings in the high-profile trial continue.
Godwin Emefiele is facing multiple charges, including alleged abuse of office and financial misconduct during his tenure at the Central Bank.
