A packed passenger bus carrying around 40 to 50 people lost control while boarding a ferry at Daulatdia Ghat on the Padma River Wednesday afternoon and plunged straight into the water.
The Dhaka-bound Souhardo Paribahan bus tilted sharply rolled off pontoon No 3 around 5:15 pm and sank fast to nearly 30 feet deep. Shocking video shows passengers scrambling as the vehicle disappears in seconds.
Rescue teams pulled 18 bodies from the submerged bus by early Thursday including two women identified as Rehena Begum 60 and Marjina Begum 55. At least 11 survivors swam to shore while others remain missing or trapped inside. Divers and cranes continue the grim operation amid strong currents.
A smaller ferry reportedly struck the pontoon just before the crash possibly triggering the disaster. The terminal is one of Bangladesh busiest river crossings where millions travel daily but safety barriers and ramps have long drawn criticism.
This latest tragedy highlights the dangers at crowded ferry ghats where overloaded vehicles and shaky infrastructure keep claiming lives.
