The manner in which Nigerian politicians seek power has been criticized by Professor Usman Yusuf, who claims that many people perceive leadership as a means of personal gain rather than as a chance to help the populace.
Professor Yusuf asserted in a SYMFONI TV interview that ministers frequently use their offices to amass wealth in order to run for governor. He continued, stating that governors, in turn, steal as much as they can in order to guarantee their eight years in office, then want to rejoin the Senate, and eventually aim for the presidency.
This cycle of corruption, according to Professor Yusuf, undermines the genuine meaning of leadership. In Islam, leadership is not something one asks for, he said, but in Nigeria, leaders are purchasing it rather than asking for it. Moreover, he stated that any leadership gained via financial means will never be favored by God Almighty.
He said,
You are a minister; you steal as much as you can to become a governor. You're a governor, so you steal as much as you can in order to keep your eight-year tenure. You want to be the president after returning to the Senate.
