Africa is currently facing a housing deficit of over 50 million units, a figure experts warn could skyrocket to 130 million by 2030 if urgent and strategic interventions are not put in place.
The alarming estimate was revealed by Festus Adebayo, Convener of the Africa International Housing Show (AIHS), ahead of the event’s landmark 20th edition.
Driven by rapid population growth, accelerating urbanisation, and long-standing structural challenges in housing delivery, the crisis continues to widen across the continent.
Beyond the lack of shelter, the housing gap is now affecting employment opportunities, urban productivity, public health, and social stability, with more than 200 million Africans currently living in informal settlements.
Experts say the time for action is now, as governments, private investors, and development partners must work together to address one of Africa’s most pressing challenges.
