Professor Usman Yusuf has voiced strong concern over the ongoing detention of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, labeling the situation as unjust and a potential threat to Nigeria’s democratic principles.
In an interview broadcast by SYMFONI TV, Yusuf clarified that although he had significant disagreements with El-Rufai’s policies and decisions during his tenure as governor, such differences should not prevent him from speaking out against what he perceives as unfair treatment. He emphasized that justice must remain consistent and impartial, regardless of an individual’s political affiliations or past actions.
Yusuf also issued a cautionary message to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to carefully assess the implications of such developments. He warned that similar actions have historically produced negative outcomes for leaders, suggesting that certain actors within the administration may be taking steps that could ultimately harm the president’s reputation, possibly without his full knowledge.
Highlighting El-Rufai’s political influence, Yusuf noted the former governor’s significant contribution to Tinubu’s electoral success, particularly in Northern Nigeria. He explained that a substantial portion of the president’s support originated from the region and credited El-Rufai as one of the key figures who mobilized that backing through strategic engagement with influential stakeholders and communities. He questioned whether the current treatment reflects appropriate recognition of those efforts.
Additionally, Yusuf referenced former Attorney General Abubakar Malami, indicating that concerns about selective or unfair treatment may extend beyond a single individual, pointing to a broader issue within the political landscape.
Reinforcing his argument, Yusuf stated, "63 percent of President Tinubu's votes came from the north, not Lagos, and Nasiru had a hand in getting the votes, talking to people. So this is how you will pay him?"
