A professor of estate management and sustainable housing advocate, Timothy Nubi, has revealed that about 40 percent of university lecturers in Nigeria now sleep in their offices due to the country’s worsening housing crisis.
Nubi made the disclosure on Wednesday during a Film Screening and Conversation on Solidarity and Movement Building to Advocate for Inclusive Housing for the Urban Poor, held at University of Lagos.
According to him, the rising cost of housing and limited access to affordable accommodation have pushed many lecturers into difficult living conditions, with some forced to temporarily reside in their offices.
The event was organised by Heinrich Böll Foundation in collaboration with the Centre for Housing and Sustainable Development, the African Cities Research Consortium, and Rethinking Cities.
Experts at the event stressed the urgent need for inclusive housing policies and stronger collaboration between government, researchers, and housing advocates to address the growing urban housing crisis affecting professionals and low-income earners across the country.
The revelation has sparked concerns about the impact of Nigeria’s housing shortage on the welfare and productivity of academic staff in higher institutions.
