The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for the submission of political parties’ membership registers to May 10, 2026, shifting it from the earlier date of April 21, 2026, as part of adjustments to the timetable for the 2027 general elections.
The decision was reached during a meeting between the Commission and political parties on March 24, 2026, following concerns raised over the initial timeline for submitting party membership registers.
In a statement issued on Friday, March 27, 2026, by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, INEC said the adjustment aligns with the 21-day requirement stipulated under Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act, 2026.
According to the Commission, political parties are now free to conduct their primaries within the approved window of April 23 to May 30, 2026, provided they comply with the legal requirement of submitting their membership registers at least 21 days before their chosen primary dates.
INEC emphasized that strict adherence to the revised schedule is crucial to ensuring a smooth and credible electoral process, urging political parties to plan accordingly and meet all stipulated deadlines.
The Commission noted that the extension is designed to harmonize statutory provisions with the practical timelines set by political parties, while maintaining the integrity of the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
