A pupil of St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado-Ekiti, Oreoluwa Alayande, has won the 2025 MTN mPulse Spelling Bee, earning N10 million educational support for her school from MTN Nigeria.
The telecommunications company announced that the prize would be used to upgrade the school’s laboratory and enhance digital learning facilities for pupils.
The reward package includes installation of 10 5G routers, donation of 10 new laptops and other educational equipment aimed at improving access to technology in the school.
Speaking during the presentation of the intervention at the school in Ado-Ekiti, the Sales and Trade Development Manager of MTN in Ekiti, Chinyere Ikechi, said the company decided to support the school in recognition of the student’s exceptional performance in the national competition.
She said the spelling bee attracted thousands of entries from pupils across the country, adding that Alayande distinguished herself through confidence, intelligence and strong academic ability.
Ikechi said the 14-year-old pupil would serve as a one-day Chief Executive Officer of MTN at its Lagos headquarters on March 11 and act as an mPulse ambassador for the next one year.
She said: “The competition received thousands of entries from brilliant pupils across the country. Oreoluwa represented not just the school, but also the entire state with distinction, confidence and intelligence and these are values that we promote in the community.
“Following the outstanding performance of Oreoluwa, we made a commitment not just to celebrate the winner, but also to invest in the school that nurtured such brilliance.
“Today, we are fulfilling that promise. We are proud to officially hand over a N10 million intervention project, which includes fully installed 10 new air conditioners for the computer lab and a 30kV lithium inverter battery system. In addition to this, we will be giving the school 10 new laptops, 10 broadband devices and other educational equipment.
“To our shining star, Oreoluwa Alayande, our 2025 MTN Spelling Bee champion, we are very proud of you. Your achievement has not only brought honour to your family and your school, but has also inspired an entire nation.’’
The Head Teacher, Lawrence Oluwafemi, hailed MTN for the intervention, describing it as a major boost to teaching and learning in the institution.
He said the school management had also decided to give Alayande a scholarship for the rest of her education at the college.
The SSS2 pupil expressed gratitude to MTN, her teachers and parents for their support, saying the competition helped pupils build confidence and improve their vocabulary.
