World’s Largest Church Exterior Completed After 144 Years in Spain

The exterior of the world’s largest church, the Basílica de la Sagrada Família, has officially been completed—144 years after construction first began.

Located in Barcelona, the iconic basilica has stood as one of the most ambitious architectural projects in modern history. Construction started in 1882 and later came under the direction of renowned Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí, whose visionary design transformed the structure into a global symbol of faith and creativity.

Despite delays caused by funding challenges, historical events, and even the COVID-19 pandemic, work on the basilica has steadily progressed over the decades. The completion of its exterior marks a historic milestone, drawing global attention from pilgrims, tourists, and architecture enthusiasts alike.

Although the outer structure is now complete, interior detailing and finishing works are expected to continue as the project moves toward full completion.
