Sergey Shmolik was a well-respected referee in the Belarus Premier League and a FIFA-listed coach who started his refereeing career from 1993 to 2008. He was banned because of alcohol, despite having won the Best Referee award in 2007 for the Belarus league.
In 2008, Sergey Shmolik was called to officiate a match between Vitebsk and Naftan in the Belarusian Premier League. When he entered the pitch, he first stood in the middle and bent down slightly as if his back was hurting. While bending down, he closed his eyes and blew his whistle, signaling the start of the match.
Sergey kept blowing his whistle every few seconds.. Whenever a player attempt to score, he would blow the whistle, leading people to suspect that the referee was under the influence. The shocking moment came when Sergey stood at the center of the pitch and refused to run again.
As people began to notice that the referee was unwell, they sent an official to escort him off the pitch before he collapsed. When asked what was wrong, he claimed to be sick and said his back was hurting.
The ambulance took him to the hospital, where the doctor conducted tests. After the tests, the doctor informed the officials that the alcohol level in the referee's system was too high, stating that if he were to be released, he could start an alcohol company, which explained his behavior. He had consumed a significant amount of alcohol before the match.
It was in that hospital that they wrote his termination letter, banning him from officiating any matches again.
