A major legal battle has broken out over the ownership of Burna Boy’s early music catalogue, pitching his former record label against his current management amid allegations of fraud and secret backroom deals.
At the centre of the dispute is a controversial transaction allegedly executed around May/June 2024, which has now triggered criminal investigations and high-stakes lawsuits at the Federal High Court in Lagos and Port Harcourt.
According to reports, Aristokrat Music — the label that introduced Burna Boy to the music scene in 2011 — allegedly sold the singer’s historical intellectual property (IP) and master recordings to Spaceship Music.
Spaceship Music is Burna Boy’s current imprint, led by the artist himself and his mother, Bose Ogulu.
The deal has now become the subject of intense legal scrutiny, with questions being raised over ownership rights, consent, and the legality of the transaction.
