FG Approves 300% Uniform Allowance Increase for Nurses

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved a major increase in the annual uniform allowance for nurses working in federal hospitals, medical centres, and clinics, raising it from ₦20,000 to ₦80,000 — a 300% boost aimed at improving the welfare of frontline healthcare workers.

According to a memo issued by the National Salaries, Wages and Income Commission, the new allowance takes effect from January 2026 and will be paid through the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS).

The review comes after sustained pressure from nurses’ unions, who had long described the former ₦20,000 allowance as grossly inadequate and called for broader reforms to improve conditions within Nigeria’s health sector.

For many nurses, the decision is being seen as a welcome step toward better recognition and motivation for those at the frontline of patient care.
