Veteran Nigerian folk musician Beautiful Nubia has accused gospel singer Yinka Ayefele and fellow artiste BBO of allegedly using the melody from his classic song without permission or proper credit.
Beautiful Nubia, whose real name is Segun Akinlolu, made the allegation publicly, claiming that the melody from his 1997 hit song Seven Lifes was copied and used in later gospel songs released by the two artistes.
According to him, Yinka Ayefele’s gospel track released years after Seven Lifes contains a melody structure that closely resembles his original composition. He also alleged that BBO’s more recent song followed the same melodic pattern, raising concerns about originality and intellectual property rights in the Nigerian music industry.
The respected folk musician expressed disappointment over what he described as a lack of respect for creative ownership, especially within the gospel music community. He questioned why artistes continue to use melodies created by others without seeking permission or acknowledging the original creator.
The allegations have since sparked conversations among music fans and industry observers, with many calling for greater respect for copyright laws and protection of artistic works.
As of the time of this report, neither Yinka Ayefele nor BBO has issued an official response to the claims.
