About 100 United States military personnel have arrived at Bauchi Airfield to support Nigeria’s armed forces with training, technical assistance, and intelligence cooperation.
The announcement was made by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) on Monday, February 16, in a statement signed by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba.
🔎 Purpose of the Deployment
According to the DHQ, the deployment follows a formal request by the Federal Government of Nigeria to address specific military training needs as part of ongoing Nigeria–US defence collaboration.
The military high command emphasized that:
• The US personnel are technical specialists
• They are operating strictly in advisory and training roles
• They are not combat troops
• All activities will be conducted under the authority of the Nigerian government and in coordination with the Armed Forces of Nigeria

The partnership is aimed at:
• Enhancing access to specialized technical capabilities
• Strengthening intelligence cooperation
• Improving capacity to identify and neutralize extremist threats
• Safeguarding vulnerable communities
Joint training exercises and intelligence-focused initiatives are expected to boost operational effectiveness against terrorist groups threatening national security.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain fully committed to degrading and defeating terrorist organizations that threaten the country’s sovereignty, national security, and the safety of its citizens,” the statement added.
The development underscores deepening defence ties between Nigeria and the United States as both countries intensify cooperation in combating terrorism and strengthening regional security.
