According to a report by Punch Newspaper on Saturday, January 17, 2026, Chief Osita Okechukwu, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Enugu State, has called on Nigerians, with emphasis on political leaders from the North, to support President Bola Tinubu through the completion of a second term in office.
He made the appeal while addressing party members and supporters during the flag-off of the APC electronic registration exercise at Eke Ward in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State on Saturday.
Chief Osita Okechukwu, who previously served as Director General of the Voice of Nigeria, spoke shortly after taking part in the registration process, he said the exercise was part of efforts to strengthen the party’s structure at the grassroots and ensure wider participation ahead of future political activities.
According to him, party unity and adherence to agreed political arrangements were necessary for stability in the country’s democratic process.
During his remarks, Okechukwu explained that his position was based on the principle of zoning and rotation of the presidency between the North and the South.
He stated that President Tinubu, who is from the South, should be allowed to complete two terms before power returns to the North, stressing that this understanding should guide political actions across party lines. “By the time Tinubu finishes in 2031, any southerner who is coming for president, we will not allow the person because it will be the turn of the North,” he said.
The APC chieftain also referred to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in his address, noting that Abubakar was likely to emerge as the winner of the African Democratic Congress presidential primaries, he urged him and his supporters to respect the zoning arrangement and avoid actions that could heighten political tension or undermine national cohesion.
Okechukwu maintained that the zoning and rotational formula had helped to manage diversity and balance interests among Nigeria’s regions.
He said disregarding the arrangement could lead to avoidable disagreements and weaken public confidence in the political system, he added that respecting turn-taking would encourage fairness and inclusiveness in governance.
On the APC e-registration exercise, Okechukwu described it as an important step toward rebuilding and expanding the party’s membership base in Enugu State, he said the process would help identify committed members and reposition the party for stronger participation in future elections at both state and national levels.
He concluded his engagement at the ward level by urging party members to remain focused on organization and discipline, while encouraging political leaders across the country to place national interest above personal ambition.
According to him, cooperation and respect for established political practices remained essential for sustaining democratic stability in Nigeria.
