A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Adetokunbo Pearse, has alleged that the American government made specific demands to the Nigerian government, warning that failure to comply could expose the country to outcomes similar to developments in Venezuela.
Pearse made the claims during an interview on Arise Television on Sunday, January 4, 2026, while discussing Nigeria’s security situation, governance, and international relations. According to Pearse, the United States outlined three actions it expects the Nigerian government to take.
“Three things that the American government has asked the Nigerian government to do to avoid the kind of thing that has happened to them in Venezuela,” he said. He identified the first demand as the release of an individual who was arrested. “One, you release, what’s his name, is he Jack or Jackson, the guy that was arrested, defending himself. Release him,” Pearse stated.
He said the second demand involved the disclosure of alleged sponsors of terrorism. “Number two, publish the name of people who are sponsoring terrorism. They haven’t done that,” he said. Pearse added that the government was unable to comply with that demand. “They can’t do it, because if you publish those names…” he said.
At that point during the interview, he was challenged on the claims. “Those are allegations that you cannot prove. You can’t prove those allegations, and you do not know for a fact that America has asked for such a list to be published,” the interviewer said. Pearse rejected the challenge and insisted on the accuracy of his statement. “No, no, no, that is a fact,” he replied.
He went on to outline the third demand allegedly made by the American government. “The third thing is that you must end terrorism in your country,” Pearse said. He further specified the nature of the violence referenced. “Attacks on Christians and non-Muslims and non-supporters of extremists. All the killings, the terrorism, the insecurity must end. Those are the three things,” he stated.
During the exchange, the interviewer noted ongoing cooperation between Nigeria and the United States. “Which is why the Nigerian government is working with the American government,” the interviewer said. Pearse responded skeptically. “So they say. Yes, so they say,” he replied.
He pointed to recent security incidents as evidence of unresolved challenges. “But the bombings in Sokoto, look, we have a serious problem,” Pearse said. He accused the current administration of widespread failure. “This government has failed in so many ways,” he stated.
Pearse further alleged foreign control over key national systems. “We have outsourced our economy to France. Our tax data is in France. It is not under our control,” he said. He also commented on security arrangements. “Our security is under the control of the Americans,” Pearse added.
He linked insecurity in Nigeria to regional implications. “Do you know that when you go and bomb in Sokoto, this is not a question of Nigeria alone,” he said. Pearse referenced countries in the Sahel region. “You are facing all those countries in the Sahel that have liberated themselves. Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. That is the target,” he stated.
He claimed Nigeria’s actions had wider consequences. “You have exposed all those people to attacks from America. Because you are looking for a way out in Nigeria,” Pearse said. He concluded with strong remarks about national sovereignty and governance. “So we have sold out Africa. We have sold out our own country under this administration. This administration must go,” he said.
